Remote Access & Zero Trust Comparison
Remote Access & Zero Trust Platforms
Compare client support, identity integration, deployment choices, and access controls across business VPN, mesh networking, and ZTNA services. The OpenVPN row covers CloudConnexa and Access Server, not the protocol alone. Features vary by product, plan, platform, and configuration. Reviewed 9 October 2026.
Connectivity & Access
Connectivity & Access
OS cells refer to supported clients; minimum versions, distributions, and feature parity vary. Browser access means access to protected resources, not merely a web admin console. Browser sessions, extensions, and clientless web apps have different scopes.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NordLayer | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Extension; virtual gateway required |
| Tailscale | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | SSH Console (beta) |
| NetBird | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Browser SSH / RDP; proxy beta |
| ZeroTier | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
| Twingate | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Web apps require installed client |
| Cloudflare Zero Trust | Cloudflare One Client | Cloudflare One Client | Cloudflare One Client | Cloudflare One Client | Cloudflare One Client | Access web apps / browser sessions |

Identity & Access
Identity & Access Management
SSO, MFA, and provisioning vary by plan and provider integration. IdP-based MFA is enforced by the identity provider. Admin roles and network access policies are different controls; SCIM availability does not imply every IdP supports the same sync scope.
| Platform | SSO | MFA | SCIM | Microsoft Entra ID | Google Workspace | Roles / Access Policies |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NordLayer | Yes | Yes | Plan-dependent | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Tailscale | Yes | Via IdP | Plan-dependent | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| NetBird | Yes | Via IdP | Cloud Team+ / commercial self-hosted | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| ZeroTier | Paid device SSO; platform-dependent | Via IdP / account authentication | Not documented; verify with vendor | OIDC configuration; paid SSO | OIDC compatibility; verify integration | Yes |
| Twingate | Yes | Via IdP | Plan-dependent | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Cloudflare Zero Trust | Yes | Via IdP | Plan-dependent | Yes | Yes | Yes |

Deployment & Architecture
Deployment & Architecture
Self-hosted refers to the control plane, not just installing a connector or client. Hybrid means managed services with components in your network. Mesh refers to private connectivity between enrolled devices; direct peer paths and provider-routed paths differ; ZTNA describes configured identity-based least-privilege access, not a certification.
| Platform | SaaS Managed | Self-Hosted | Hybrid | Mesh VPN | ZTNA | Site-to-Site |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NordLayer | Yes | No | Limited | No | Yes | Yes |
| Tailscale | Managed coordination service | No; Headscale is a separate project | Yes | Yes | Identity / policy-based access | Yes |
| NetBird | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| ZeroTier | Yes | Self-hosted network controller | Yes | Yes | No | Yes |
| Twingate | Yes | No | Hosted controller / local connectors | No | Yes | Service access; not a subnet VPN |
| Cloudflare Zero Trust | Yes | No | Yes | Cloudflare Mesh; provider-routed | Yes | Mesh / WAN; routing setup required |
| Check Point SASE | Yes | No | Yes | No | Yes | Yes |
| OpenVPN | CloudConnexa | Access Server | Product / connector-dependent | No | CloudConnexa / configured controls | Yes |

Security & Compliance
Security & Compliance
Log scope, retention, posture checks, and session policies vary by product and plan. Gateway location is not control-plane or log residency; review the DPA, subprocessors, and regional terms. Compliance documents do not establish compliance for your deployment.
| Platform | Audit Logs | Device Trust | Access Policies | Data Residency | Compliance Docs | Session Controls |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NordLayer | Activity logs; scope / retention vary | Device Posture Security; plan-dependent | Yes | Gateway and metadata locations differ | Available | Limited |
| Tailscale | Config / network logs; plan-dependent | Device posture / integrations | Yes | Managed metadata; review processing terms | Available | Key expiry / SSH reauthentication |
| NetBird | Activity / traffic logs; edition-dependent | Posture checks; edition-dependent | Yes | Cloud terms / self-hosted location | Available | Peer login / inactivity expiry |
| ZeroTier | Plan dependent | Limited | Yes | Hosted Central / own controller location | Available | No |
| Twingate | Yes | Yes | Yes | Managed metadata; review processing terms | Available | Yes |
| Cloudflare Zero Trust | Yes | Client posture / integrations | Yes | Service-specific regional controls | Available | Yes |
| Check Point SASE | Yes | Yes | Yes | Regional tenant options | Available | Yes |
| OpenVPN | Depends on setup | CloudConnexa / product-specific checks | Yes | Cloud region / Access Server hosting | Vendor docs / operator responsibility | Depends on product |
